Stacking Entropy of Hard Sphere Crystals
نویسندگان
چکیده
Classical hard spheres crystallize at equilibrium at high enough density. Crystals made up of stackings of 2-dimensional hexagonal close-packed layers (e.g. fcc , hcp , etc.) differ in entropy by only about 10−3kB per sphere (all configurations are degenerate in energy). To readily resolve and study these small entropy differences, we have implemented two different multicanonical Monte Carlo algorithms that allow direct equilibration between crystals with different stacking sequences. Recent work had demonstrated that the fcc stacking has higher entropy than the hcp stacking. We have studied other stackings to demonstrate that the fcc stacking does indeed have the highest entropy of all possible stackings. The entropic interactions we could detect involve three, four and (although with less statistical certainty) five consecutive layers of spheres. These interlayer entropic interactions fall off in strength with increasing distance, as expected; this fall-off appears to be much slower near the melting density than at the maximum (close-packing) density. At maximum density the entropy difference between fcc and hcp stackings is 0.00115±0.00004 kB per sphere, which is roughly 30% higher than the same quantity measured near the melting transition.

Slanted stacking faults and persistent face centered cubic crystal growth in sedimentary colloidal hard sphere crystals†
Hard sphere crystal growth is a delicate interplay between kinetics and thermodynamics, where the former is commonly thought to favour a random hexagonal close packed structure and the latter leads to a face centered cubic crystal. In this article, we discuss the influence of slanted stacking faults on the growth of sedimentary colloidal crystals from dispersions with high initial volume fracti...
متن کاملEpitaxially grown colloidal crystals of silica microspheres on patterned substrate of triangular arrays
We have studied the colloidal self-assembly of silica microspheres on a glass substrate patterned with triangular dimple arrays of varying pitch. Using the same silica microspheres, both charge-stabilized and hard-sphere-like binary mixtures of microspheres and nanoparticles were prepared, and their gravitational sedimentation followed by colloidal crystallization were rigorously examined in re...

In this article we first introduce the weighted density approximation (WDA) to study the classical inhomogeneous system such as inhomogeneous fluids. Then we introduce the modified weighted density approximation (MWDA) to calculate the structure and thermodynamical properties of the FCC hard sphere crystal. The MWDA is a self consistent method where the free energy is expressed as an unperturb...
متن کاملPatchy colloids: entropy stabilizes open crystals.
S purred by recent advances in microparticle synthesis, colloidal particles with 'sticky patches' on their surface have of late become a focus of interest. This is in great part because colloids with anisotropic, patchy interactions should allow better control of colloidal self-assembly so as to achieve specific target structures with tailored photonic, catalytic or mechanical properties 1. Man...
متن کاملFabrication of large binary colloidal crystals with a NaCl structure.
Binary colloidal crystals offer great potential for tuning material properties for applications in, for example, photonics, semiconductors and spintronics, because they allow the positioning of particles with quite different characteristics on one lattice. For micrometer-sized colloids, it is believed that gravity and slow crystallization rates hinder the formation of high-quality binary crysta...
